When finding ways to disentangle or entangle consciously what might be regarded as 'therapeutic' in my work, Jeanette Winterson provided some useful insights: her novels, which take the form of written memoir or autobiography, she suggests, were not therapy, but a culmination or accommodation with the self. My visual work charts long years when after an illness language failed as a refuge, and I had to find new methods and approaches to my visual image making.
